Deep
Friendships

Based on Mark 2 — four men who tore a hole in a roof to carry their friend to Jesus. That is the bar. Here is the framework for building friendships like that.

01
Commit
Pre-decide who you're going to be before you walk through the door

Pre-deciding is choosing ahead of time who you want to be and what you will do — before pressure, emotion, or temptation shows up. You pre-decide everything else that matters to you. Do it for friendship too.

Pre-decide that church is not just a place you go, but a people you belong to. Pre-decide that you will sign up for the group, talk to someone new, and stop doing life alone. Make the decision before the moment asks you to.

02
Connect
Pursue people — don't wait to be pursued

Deep friendship does not happen in the auditorium. It happens after, in the parking lot, at the coffee shop, in a small group living room. Connection requires initiative. Somebody has to go first.

Jesus was called a friend of sinners not because sinners came to Him first — but because He crossed the room. If you want friends who will carry you, be willing to be the one who moves first.

03
Know
Be known and actually know others

The four friends in Mark 2 knew their friend's circumstances well enough to show up without being asked, to know what he needed, and to act on his behalf. That kind of knowledge only comes from time, honesty, and proximity.

You cannot carry someone you don't know. And you cannot be carried by people who don't know what is actually going on in your life. Let depth happen. Be known.

04
Carry
Show up for people the way Jesus showed up for you

There are moments in every person's life when they are too weak, too broken, or too stuck to move on their own. Deep friends show up for those moments — they get messy, refuse to quit, and find a way.

The gospel is the reason we do this. Jesus showed up, got His hands dirty, did not quit, and carried us when we could not carry ourselves. If He has loved us like that, we should be people who love others like that too.
